As people age they continue to enjoy eating but illness or a neurological incident can inhibit their ability to chew and swallow safely. In this webinar Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson will address the needs of clients with deficits in sensory (including taste and awareness of the bolus), motor and movement patterns in the “Oral Preparatory (bolus formation) Phase” of swallowing. It is not a class in dysphagia.
Her innovative tactile-sensory-motor approach to client-based treatment uses therapy tools to train muscle movements which are then transitioned into movements for improved feeding skills/safety. Participants will learn how to create an individualized therapy program to include: seating, the sensory system and feeding with the goal of improving “quality of life.”
- Participants will be able to explain the importance of working on jaw grading for improved feeding safety.
- Participants will be able to teach the steps needed to facilitate jaw grading with compression as a component of working towards normalizing a diet for clients with the diagnosis of dysarthria.
- Participants will learn to use Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) techniques to improve bolus control.
