This course is designed to equip school speech-language pathologists with the knowledge and skills necessary to support children with tongue ties effectively. Participants will delve into the impact of tongue ties on speech and language development in school-aged children, gaining a deeper understanding of how this condition can affect communication skills.

Effective communication strategies for discussing tongue ties with parents will be explored, enabling participants to engage in productive and informative conversations with families. Additionally, participants will learn how to navigate the educational system to support families with post-op exercises, ensuring continuity of care and optimal outcomes for children undergoing treatment for tongue ties.

Collaborative approaches for supporting children with tongue ties within the school environment will be highlighted, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and coordination among educators, healthcare providers, and families. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical strategies and insights to enhance their support for children with tongue ties, ultimately promoting their overall communication and academic success.

The participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of tongue ties on speech and language development in school-aged children.
  2. List effective communication strategies for discussing tongue ties with parents.
  3. Apply collaborative approaches for supporting children with tongue ties within the school environment.
  4. Describe how to navigate the educational system to support families with post-op exercises.
  • 5 minutes: Introduction
  • 10 minutes: Understanding Tongue Ties
  • 45 minutes: Impact on Speech and Oral Function
  • 45 minutes: Effects of tongue ties on speech, language, and academic performance
  • 15 minutes: Communication Strategies for Discussing Tongue Ties with Parents
