A tradition that I began years ago was to write a ‘back to school’ letter to each of my children on the eve of their first day of school. My kiddos look forward to it every year.
Here is what I wrote to Annabelle a few weeks ago…
To my sweet Annabelle Kate on the eve of your first day of Kindergarten,
Oh my, where do I even begin? Nearly 6 years ago, I anxiously waited for your arrival, not knowing what the future would hold for you or me or our family. I didn’t know if you would ever talk or walk or be able to go to school with typical kids. My list of worries was a million miles long.
Well, of course, I was wrong in every way possible. You surprise me nearly every day with your wit and charm. I seriously haven’t found anything that you can’t do or are incapable of learning. Your desire for independence is beyond admirable. You are sassy, funny, and are bursting with personality.
As I think about what advice to give you as you begin kindergarten tomorrow, the first thing that comes to my mind is ‘keep up the good work.’ (Yes, I wish I had something more profound to say.)
And a few other reminders:
- Work hard.
- Be kind to everyone.
- Be helpful.
- Stay focused.
- Don’t tell your teacher “no” 20 times a day.
- Don’t be offended if someone doesn’t want to play with you. You are super cool, and you are so very loved.
I hope you have a wonderful first day of school. I can’t wait to hear all about it. Best wishes, my darling. I hope that I have done all I could to prepare you for this day.
I am so very proud of you.
Love,
Mom
