5.8 Years: Graduating Preschool

Annabelle has officially graduated from preschool!

She did a great job at her graduation which consisted of songs, slideshows, pictures, and a diploma ceremony. While Annabelle is looking ahead to a summer full of dance, t-ball, swimming, and horseback riding lessons, my mind is jumping ahead to kindergarten this fall. So, at the conclusion of the school year, I sat down with Annabelle’s preschool teacher, her future kindergarten teacher, and the school’s principal. (She attends a small, private school that has never had a student with Down syndrome.)

During the hour-long meeting, we discussed Annabelle’s strengths and weaknesses and everyone’s expectations for next year. I wanted to get a full understanding of whether or not Annabelle could be in a typical classroom full time or what kind of supports she would need (para professional, 1/2 day in private and 1/2 day in public, pull-out settings, self-contained classroom, etc etc).

I am thrilled to report that Annabelle’s teachers and staff are super supportive and the meeting to discuss our plan for kindergarten went well! Annabelle will be mainstreamed in a kindergarten class with 17 typical students. She will have no para and no push out or push in support. She will attend speech therapy on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with other students in her class. I know that this might not be the ‘forever plan’ but so far, so good. I am so proud of Miss Annabelle Kate!

Cheers from Lanie & Belle
