6 Years 1 Month: No Sugar Coating Here!

Annabelle just wrapped up her 1st quarter of kindergarten!

Although she asks me daily if she “has the day off,” I know that somewhere deep down she really loves school. She is always happy when I pick her up and has many stories to share.

To mark the end of the quarter, we had parent-teacher conferences. After reviewing Annabelle’s work and chit chatting a bit, her teacher stated, “Annabelle does very well academically, but we are having some problems with behavior.” Oh here we go! To summarize the issues, she has helped herself to a neighbor’s chips at lunch, took a classmate’s pencil, has given a few peers a little push while lining up, and has also taken it upon herself to draw on a student’s paper. No sugar coating in this post!

Luckily, the “safe seat” which our school utilizes, has been effective. I always thought academics and communication is what I would have to be worrying about… not taking someone’s potato chips! We have been working on making better choices since that conference, and I believe that things have been better. One day at a time, right?

In regards to speech, she is cruising along nicely. We are meeting with Monica Purdy from TalkTools next week. We are looking forward to touching base and refreshing our current oral motor exercises.

Annabelle has been using TalkTools since she was born. Her story is a great inspiration for parents of a child with Down Syndrome. Follow Miss Annabelle’s journey from the beginning here.
